About Frommer's Washington, D.C. With Kids, Washington, D.C. For Dummies, and The Complete Idiot's Travel Guide to Washington,
D.C.
I moved to D.C. in the '60s to attend George Washington University and fell in love with the city. I grabbed my diploma and got a job with a
trade association on Connecticut Avenue. I used to brown bag it at my desk so I could sandwich in museum visits.
Fast forward a few years. I was living in Maryland and had two young kids. I had trouble whipping up enthusiasm for Play-Doh and
coffee klatches with other young mothers. So we'd pile in the car and hit the kid-friendly sights in D.C. In the '70s and '80s there were
no comprehensive guidebooks geared to families. You really had to scrounge, especially if you wanted to plan ahead. The idea for the book
began to percolate then. But I didn't have time to blow my nose, much less write a guidebook.
In the late '80s I approached a publisher with a proposal. They turned me down, citing "no substantial market for a family guidebook to D.C."
Excuse me? I was involved in other projects at the time and put it on the back burner. A couple of years later they approached me. Go figure.
In 1992 the first edition of Frommer's Washington, D.C. With Kids was born.
I revise it every two years. The 8th edition will hit bookstores in March 2006.
When the same publisher was looking for someone to author The Complete Idiot's Travel Guide to Washington, DC
and Washington, D.C. For Dummies, I jumped at the chance.
Writing guidebooks is a bear (to put it politely). Detail, detail,
detail. Writing fiction is a welcome change. I can make it all up. If I did
that with the guidebooks I'd last about 2 minutes. |
